School, the singular word emotes all kinds of feelings in a student. A student feels anger, annoyance, pride, happiness, or even in some cases fear. School is supposed to be somewhere where you get an education, learn information about the world that you usually dont obtain in an normal environment.
The other day we had a little in-class discussion about school. It went from lessons that we learn subconsciously through school such as following the man and working hard. The discussion went from should achievement be awarded to "barbie" or should it be awarded to "beavis". Should A's be given to the person that works hard and doesn't learn much or to the person who learns alot but doesn't actually do any work. To be honest I don't think that discussion can ever be settled, but in my eyes I feel as if hardwork goes further than intelligence. In a book that I read, "Outliers", intelligence only goes so far. An IQ of 125 is all that is really necessary to be truly sucessful, any IQ past that doesn't exactly represent sucess. An example they had was a man who had an IQ of 215, about 35 points higher than Einstein's. Where did he end up? He is now a construction worker somewhere in Minnestoa. So how is sucess measured? And I use success in the formula that money+happiness+fame+enjoyment= success. The majority of the people who is said to achieved success was not through IQ or connections but time. There's this 10,000 hour rule, where in order to be successful there needs to be a devotion of 10,000 hours to that specific skill. Bill Gates spent over hundreds of thousands of hours on his development of Microsoft. Heck, even drug dealers have to spend countless hours in their trade in order to be successful. So all in all, hardwork does pay off, and if we just look at the literal physical aspect of the comparison. Beavis, is almost nonexistant now, Barbie on the other hand is still a mutli million dollar corporation that flourishes internationally.
Another thing that I learned in school was not the actual material that we're supposed to be learning. Its the honing of my cognitive ability to analyze specific data and organize it in order sharpen my mind. Grade school, middle school, and most of highschool isn't directed towards teaching you material to apply it to the world. Its only teaching you steps where you can better train your mind in preparation for the next step. For instance take a look at the feral children who have no nurturing or caring, they might have had a potential cognitive ability to learn alot but without the intellectually stimulating environment they were able to accomplish nothing. That's what school should be, its only an environment where our minds will stay busy and working so we can prepare for the next step forward. Ever go through summer not doing anything and then coming back to school and having a rough time even taking notes because your hand writing is so sloppy? Exactly, a mind is a muscle and without extensive training it will never be fully capable of achieving what you want it to do.
